Happy Hump Day!

So, I know its GJ day (Gratuitous Jaxper), and I will be providing you with plenty of the purty, but first I feel the need to get on a soapbox for a moment. I want to talk to all of you non-Southern authors out there that want to write from Jasper, Peter or Charlotte's POV.

There are some things that you need to have on hand or access to before you publish. These are:
1) a beta who is from the South (not counting Florida). I'm talking Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama or Georgia.
2) access to listen to someone from the above mentioned place. Not from movies. Movies and TV never get the accent right.
3) finally, you should look up any of the many Southern dictionaries online to give you a reference to start your dialog. A good place to start is here.

Now, don't think that just because you have the right words you automagically know how to use them in context. Let me explain. Just because we say 'ya' in place of 'you' it doesn't mean that EVERY 'you' should be 'ya'. There are certain places within a sentence that it belongs. The same with dropping the 'g' from 'ing'. This is where your Southern beta comes in handy. And nothing annoys me more than reading the Southern accent when it's been chopped all to hell. Ask wifey. I gripe about 'ya's' all the damned time. Just ask her. It'll make me quit reading *stern face*.

Now, enough with my rambling and soap boxing. I know why you are here and I promise not to let you down. So let the GJ begin.

Just...ung. I wanna lick the happy trail.
Tired, but still beautiful

How 'bout you let me chew on that lip

OMG...new chest tat. I want to lick it!

  1. She does indeed gripe about people using 'ya' and 'darlin'' all the time. I don't use either on principle except on the rare occasions that Peter's voice demands it and wifey insists on putting it in. Fortunately, there are certain similarities between my UK southernisms and her US southernisms that make for a smoother ride.
I still haven't forgiven her for inflicting 'yonder' on me though.
